Racing Santander continued
their recent good form with a 0-2 victory over Espanyol, who are paying the
price of their good Spanish cup run as well as their participation in the UEFA
cup. The Catalans came in to the game tired but content after their cup victory
against Deportivo, although Gorka had to be on his toes to keep out
Antoñito early on. Lopo headed a corner against the outside of the post
and Fredson headed another chance over, but Damià shot just wide for the
visitors in between.
Espanyol felt they should
have had a penalty in the second minute of the second half when Oriol held back
Luis García, but otherwise there were few chances, and the only action
that raised any interest from the crowd was the introduction of Oscar Serrano,
who was given a hard time by the home fans after abandoning the club in the
summer.
With eight minutes to go
though the local defence failed to clear a corner, and the ball fell to
Damià who chipped it back over the heads of everyone and in to the net.
And while the home side were still reeling, the ex Barcelona youngster sent
away Casquero for him to lob the keeper and score a second. The game was over
in an instant, and the locals now have to pick themselves up for another
gruelling cup tie next Wednesday, this time against Schalke in the UEFA cup.
