Fifth placed Villarreal lost ground on the leaders after they were held to a 1-1 draw by Cádiz. The visitors opened the scoring with the game only 15 seconds old, the fastest strike of the season, after Estoyanoff won the ball off a defender and set up Medina to beat Viera. And Mirosavljevic could have extended the lead a few minutes later had his shot not come back off the crossbar.

Gradually though the home side got back in the game, with Armando keeping out efforts from Cazorla and Diego Forlán before the break, and Forlán hitting the side netting a couple of times. And with the game just over an hour old, substitute Calleja picked up a pass from the Uruguayan striker to turn the ball past the keeper and equalise.

The visitors were lucky to be let off a penalty when the ball hit De la Cuesta on the arm in the area soon afterwards, but Villarreal were left with ten men when Peña picked up a second booking a few minutes later. But the most controversial moment of the game came in the last minute when Medina chested the ball over the line only for infamous linesman Rafa Guerrero and his referee Rodríguez Santiago to rule it out incorrectly for hands. An awful decision which could cost the Andalusians dearly at the end of the season.
