Sevilla moved up to fifth in the table ahead of Villarreal after beating Pellegrini's side 2-0 on Sunday evening. The visitors had only taken one point from their six previous visits to the Sánchez Pizjuán stadium, and without the injured Riquelme they missing their usual sparkle. However the early chances did fall to the East coast side, Cazorla shooting wide and a long Marcos Senna free kick almost catching Palop off guard.

The Andalusians gradually took control though, and Viera had to be at his best to turn an effort from Kanouté away for a corner. And with half an hour on the clock Daniel Alves sent Luis Fabiano away for him to lift a shot past the keeper and in to the net.

Viera was in action soon afterwards to keep out a dangerous free kick from Martí, but before the half time whistle his side were left with ten men when Josico picked up a second yellow card for protesting.

Sevilla took advantage to push forward, with Alves and Adriano going close and Adriano having a penalty claim turned down. A few minutes later though Kanouté got on the end of a Jesús Navas floated cross to turn the ball in on the far post. The game was over, and it could have been a bigger scoreline had Viera not kept out Saviola and Kanouté near the end.
