Espanyol climbed away from
the relegation spots after a 2-0 win over Mallorca, the first time they have
taken the three points since they beat Real Madrid over two months ago. The
visitors had taken seven points from their last three games, but they were
outclassed by their hosts who could have opened the scoring had Tamudo been
able to get on the end of a De la Peña free kick and another dangerous
cross from Luis García.
The Balearic Islanders only
really troubled Kameni with a long shot from Borja, and five minutes before the
break referee Mejuto González ruled that Iuliano had fouled Luis
García in the area, allowing Tamudo to score his first league goal since
May from the penalty spot. And just a couple of minutes later Luis
García made it two after De la Peña set him up, the ex Mallorca
forward not celebrating the goal out of respect for his old club.
Cúper brought on
extra forwards as the game progressed, with Okubo replacing defender Iuliano on
the hour mark and Yordi and Campano coming on a few minutes later. But Kameni
was a mere spectator in the second half, and an active Luis García could
have increased the lead on more than one occasion. With five minutes to go
Mejuto upset the visitors once again when he showed a second yellow card to
Doni for protesting, but by then the game was over. It was a welcome relief for
Lotina, who had been under pressure once again to get a result.
