Atlético Madrid took
advantage of slip ups by the teams above them to get back within three points
of the UEFA spots thanks to a 3-0 win over Cádiz. The Andalusians came
in to the game having picked up seven points in their last three matches, and
they fancied their chances against a side who had only scored twice in their
own stadium all season. But Petrov and Kezman brought good saves out of Armando
early on, and midway through the first half Maxi got on the end of an Antonio
López cross to put the hosts in front. Fernando Torres (who had a
penalty appeal turned down early on) should have increased the lead a few
minutes later, and the only danger for local keeper Leo Franco came from a shot
over the bar from Pavoni and a long effort from Sesma close to the break.
Another long shot from
Raúl López almost caught Leo Franco off his line after the
restart, but Torres tested Armando at the other end a few minutes later. And
twenty minutes in to the second half Pablo came forward to head Petrov's corner
past the keeper to put the result beyond doubt. With another match at the
weekend Bianchi rested three of his key players, but Galletti came on to pick
up a pass from Gabi and shoot under the keeper near the end, his first goal for
his new club. Varela did have a late effort for the visitors, but Leo Franco
had no real problems and real problems keeping his third clean sheet in a row.
Atleti were back on track, and they climbed a point above their opponents to
eleventh in the table. |
