Last week's leaders Getafe
fell to their first defeat of the season, losing 1-0 at Betis thanks to a
controversial penalty early on. Bernd Schuster's side are proving to be the
revelation of the season though, and they started well with Pulido heading a
long free kick just over the bar. But with a quarter of an hour on the clock
Oliveira fell rather to easily over Luis García's outstretched hand, and
the Brazilian striker fired the resulting penalty into the roof of the net.
There were few chances for
the rest of the first half, the best when Varela (substituting Joaquín
who had tonsillitis) shot into the side netting. The locals could have gone
further ahead though when Marcos Assunçao crashed a free kick against
the crossbar, but at the other end Doblas had to be on his toes to punch out
another dangerous free kick from Cotelo and then a header from Güiza.
By now Betis were sitting
back to protect their lead, although Edu could have added a second when he
burst through the defence on a rapid breakaway only to be frustrated by Luis
García. And the visitors' challenge came to an end when Diego Rivas was
sent off after picking up two cautions, the second red card he has been shown
this season. The result was a welcome relief for Serra Ferrer's side, who visit
Chelsea in the Champions League next Wednesday. Getafe meanwhile were brought
back to Earth, although they still ended the weekend in third spot in the
table. |
