Real Madrid chalked up a fourth consecutive league win over their city rivals in the Vicente Calderón. The decisive moment of the match wasn't long in arriving. After just five minutes Antonio Lopez received a red card for a foul on Raúl in the penalty area. Ronaldo slotted in the penalty to the further dismay of the large home crowd.

Fernando Torres was hoping to continue the recent run of form that had produced five international goals in a week. His runs were causing problems for Real's defenders but mostly from deep areas. He was unable to provide a telling finally pass. It was Torres who had Atletico's best chance of the first half on 25 minutes but he could only shoot into the side netting.

Real came close to adding to their lead in the 33rd minute but Leo Franco blocked Ronaldo's low shot with his legs. Ten man Atletico were putting up a decent fight and held their own in terms of possession. A powerful Maxi strike just cleared Casillas' upright.

After the break Atletico forgot the perceived injustices of the first half in which Kezman, Luccin, Pablo and Petrov were all booked. The home side had been too physical at times but now they began to focus on trying to play their way back into the game. Torres won a foul on the edge of the area and Casillas was forced into a save from Petrov's free kick. The Bulgarian was to have a fine second half, always full of pace and energy, even though he had to do all the running on the left due to the early departure of Lopez.

Gutí replaced Zidane after 55 minutes and the substitute wasted little time in making his presence felt. He conjured up a defence splitting pass that put Ronaldo in the clear. The Brazilian had squandered a good chance just seconds earlier but this time he made no mistake.

Torres had two opportunities to pull Atletico back into the game. Firstly he rounded Casillas but was forced too far wide. Then in 67 minutes a shot on the turn was tipped round the post by the alert Real goalkeeper.

Robinho was introduced into the action for the last twenty minutes. The first incident involving the young Brazilian might have produced another red card when Perea, who was already booked, fouled him. The ref might have spared Perea further misery. The Atletico defender denied Ronaldo a hat trick at the death when he slid in to prod the ball into his own net. Real's celebrations were subdued, as Ronaldo was stretchered off after the incident with an ankle injury.
