Real Madrid moved up to within two points of leaders Getafe after an easy win over a Mallorca side who ended the weekend at the bottom of the table.

Mallorca's best chance of the first half was an Okubo drive after three minutes. They offered little resistance though following Ronaldo's opening goal. Just after the half hour the Brazilian collected the ball wide on the right before cutting inside past Peralta and unleashing a deadly strike in off the post.

Before the opener, Beckham had given Mallorca a warning about the quality of his set pieces with a free kick just wide of target. Beckham dead balls would play a big part in this match. A corner from the English star went direct to Roberto Carlos who was lurking outside the area. He fired a 25 yard volley across Prats into the opposite corner from the one Ronaldo had chosen.

In between the goals Baptista squeezed a ball through to Salgado on the edge of the six yard area. He cut the ball back for Raúl who tried to backheel it into the net but completely missed the ball.

Real Madrid scored two more after the break. The third goal was a powerful free kick that went right through Mallorca's weak defensive wall. Then with fifteen minutes to go another Beckham set piece was deflected into the path of Baptista and he made it four.

The second half introduction of Zidane and Robinho provided some flowing entertainment for the fans. The signs are that the Whites have recovered from their poor start to the season. Zidane tried to upstage Roberto Carlos with a fierce left foot volley but Cortés got his body in the way.

Mallorca had a couple of chances late in the game with Choutos heading over and Arango also going close. But they will be without Ballesteros in two weeks' time after he was red carded for foul play and dissent. Mallorca boss, Héctor Cúper, is likely to have his side working on how to defend free kicks before Racing visit Son Moix.
