In a repeat of last season's
Spanish cup final, Betis once again beat Osasuna, this time running out 1-0
winners thanks to a second half penalty from Oliveira. Neither keeper had much
work to do early on, but if anything the locals had the better of it,
Elía saving from Xisco's header and Juanito just failing to get on the
end of a Marcos Assunçao free kick.
Both sides had one eye on
their midweek European commitments but the locals stepped up the pressure after
the break, with Joaquín switching wings and curling a shot just wide of
the post. A few minutes later Assunçao put Xisco through, and one of the
Pamplona based side's two twin brothers Miguel Flaño tripped the striker
inside the area, Oliveira converting the resulting penalty kick.
The visitors had hardly
created a chance all match, but they were upset when rookie referee
Pérez Lima turned down an appeal for a penalty by Rivas on Romeo. The
last chance of the game though fell to Joaquín, who burst through the
middle but shot wide. However the hosts had done enough to win the three
points, giving them a boosts for their Champions League debut against Liverpool
on Tuesday night. |
