Second Division A - Day 34

Alavés moved ahead of their Basque neighbours Eibar up to third in the table after coming from a goal down to beat them 1-2. Youth international David Silva headed the locals into the lead in the seventh minute much to the satisfaction of the record 4,000 crowd, but Bodipo equalised before the break when he intercepted a clearance by Karmona to beat Iraizoz. Corredoira could have restored the lead either side of half time, firstly when he brought a good save out of Bonano and then after the restart when he hit the crossbar from close to goal. But the visitors were dangerous on the counterattack, and after the keeper kept out an effort from Rubén Navarro, Nené finally scored what was to prove the winner. Llorente had a goal disallowed at the other end in the final minutes, but it was not to be and Mendilibar's side drop out of the promotion spots having only picked up two points in their last four home games.

There was only one other match on Saturday evening, Racing Ferrol making it four victories in a row after winning 1-2 at Córdoba. The locals were hopeful of a good result after beating leaders Celta last weekend, but after a dull first 45 minutes caretaker manager Juan Carlos Rodríguez made changes early in the second half. It was the visitors who took the lead though when Vosalho headed home a corner, and a quarter of an hour from the end ex Córdoba defender Curro Vacas took advantage of a bad clearance by keeper Saja to score a second from just over the halfway line. Anderson got one back for the home side near the end, but it was too late to do any more and the Andalusians drop further down in the relegation zone, now six points away from safety pending Sunday's games. Leaders Celta bounced back after their surprise defeat the week before with a 0-1 victory against promotion rivals Elche. It was not a great game by the Galicians, but they found themselves ahead with less than a minute on the clock when Vryzas headed a cross from Angel past Caballero. After that though they hardly troubled the local defence, and only a good performance by Pinto kept their lead intact. The visiting keeper made important saves from Nino, Txiki, Azkoitia and Nino again before the break, and when he turned away an effort from Peragón after the restart, Nino could only head the rebound against the bar. Referee Caballero Herreros upset the local fans when he turned down a penalty appeal by Moisés and then disallowed an own goal by Sergio for a positional offside of Moisés, but when Raúl Ivars put a late chance wide it was all over. Fernando Vázquez's side extend their lead at the top to seven points pending Cádiz's game later in the evening, and appear to be well on track for a quick return to the top flight. (24.04.05)

Celta ended the weekend six points clear at the top after second placed Cádiz could only draw 0-0 at Poli Ejido, a result which at least takes them a point clear of Alavés. A strong wind made playing conditions difficult, but the visitors mastered it first, Oli bringing a good save out of Kike and Pavoni shooting over on the rebound. The locals came close to taking the lead before the break though, Armando having to be at his best to keep out a couple of efforts from Toedtli. Chances were fewer and further between after the restart as both sides gradually settled for a point, although Sabino could have won it for Pepe Mel's side when he shot just wide of the post in the dying minutes.

Recreativo missed out on a chance to move up to the top three after losing 2-0 to Tenerife, a match which was surrounded in controversy after threats from the locals that they would lock themselves in the dressing room as a protest about delays in payment of wages and also rumours that Alavés had paid out under the table win bonuses to some of the Canary Island players. After a brief period of pressure from the visitors, Jesús Vázquez gave his side an early lead when he picked up a pass from Fagiani to beat Luque. And shortly before half time Keko headed home Gavilán's cross to make it two. The introduction of substitute Gastón Casas revitalized the Andalusians' game, but Keko missed a couple of opprtunities to make it three near the end.

A disappointing result for Valladolid as well, their 0-2 defeat at the hands of Real Murcia leaving them ten points adrift of the top three. Marcos Alonso only had one fit forward, Jaio Castillo, but his side came close to taking the lead when Oscar Sánchez went close from a free kick in the third minute. Otherwise though neither team caused too many problems for the opposing keepers before Acciari got on the end of Julio Alvarez's free kick to chest the ball past Bizzarri a quarter of an hour from the end. Five minutes later Iván Alonso headed home another Alvarez free kick to give his side their first win in Zorrilla for 61 years and take them four points clear of the relegation zone.

Sporting Gijón are only a point behind Valladolid after a 0-2 win at Ciudad Murcia, a result which leaves the locals back in the relegation spots. If anything the home side were on top in a dull first half, but they should have gone in front after the restart after Güiza was brought down in the area by Dorado. However Roberto saved Gúiza's penalty kick, and a few minutes later Ismael got on the end of a corner to put the Asturians ahead. And Ismael it was who headed the second goal from a Pablo Alvarez cross near the end to take his side safely up to mid-table.

Xerez gave up any hope of reaching the promotion spots though after they could only draw 0-0 against Lleida. Injuries and suspensions meant that the Andalusians had to put out a depleted side, but Cachorro came close to giving them the lead early on. Sergio tested Tete at the other end though, and a few minutes later had another shot cleared off the line by José with the keeper beaten. Visiting keeper Rangel did well to stop efforts by Camuñas and Lekic after the restart, but in the end both sides had to make do with a point.

Bottom club Pontevedra kept their slim hopes of survival alive after beating Gimnastic Tarragona 3-1, a win which takes them a point above Córdoba and within six of safety. D'Amico got on the end of Capdevila's cross to head them in front with a quarter of an hour on the clock, and Javi Rodríguez, D'Amico and Capdevila all had chances to increase the lead before Charles made it two with a spectacular scissors kick three minutes in to the second half. Diego Torres headed one back for the Catalans though, and there were some nervous moments before Cuéllar deflected a Rubén Reyes cross past his own keeper in injury time.

Málaga B are out of the bottom four after they beat relegation rivals Salamanca 1-2, leaving Goikoetxea's side just a point away from the drop. A lively first half eventually came to nothing, but Zé Tó should have given the locals the lead after the interval when he shot over the bar from point blank range. Soon afterwards a poor clearance from Lupidio was picked up by Alberto for him to open the scoring, and Jesús Gámez drilled home a second soon afterwards on a quick counter-attack. Aurelio did pull one back in the final minutes following a short free kick, his side's first goal in four games, and Lupidio shot just wide of the target before the final whistle. But the home side have only picked up one point out of twelve, and once more find themselves back in the fight to avoid relegation.

Struggling Terrassa thought they would be level with Salamanca after they were leading Almería going in to the final minute of their match, but a spectacular injury time strike from Rebosio made it 1-1 in the end. After an eventless first hour, the Catalans' caretaker coach José Delgado (who had taken over from Juanma Lillo midweek) decided to bring on Juan Carlos. It proved an inspired move as within a minute the winger had won himself a penalty after being fouled by Sahnoun, and had converted it himself. But Besora missed a couple of chances to wrap up the match, and they paid the price when the Peruvian defender fired home a long shot following a free kick outside of the area. (24.04.05)
