Only two matches in the
second division on Saturday, with Celta climbing back up the table to
sixth, just a point away from the promotion spots, after a 0-1 win over bottom
club Córdoba. It was the third single goal victory in a row for
the Galicians, although it wasn't an easy win, and Pinto had to be at his best
to keep out Pulpo González and Montenegro early on. The only goal came
just before the hour mark following a corner, Oubiña finding the head of
Contreras for him to beat Jauregui. But Pinto again had to save from Armentano
later on, and González wasted another chance to equalise when he fired a
shot over the bar with the goal at his mercy in the final minutes.
Terrassa got their
revenge for the midweek cup defeat against Lleida, beating their fellow
Catalans 3-0 thanks to three goals in the last quarter of an hour. Both sides
had their chances earlier on, the best falling to Quique Martín who hit
the post in the second half. But Lleida were left with ten men when Pelegri was
sent off for a foul on Juanele on the edge of the area, and Rodri scored from
the resulting free kick. Luis López got a second from the penalty spot
after keeper Eduardo brought down Monty, and Quique Martín wrapped
things up with a long shot from the halfway line which caught the keeper out of
his goal. (13.11.04)
Eibar opened up a
four point gap at the top of the table after a 0-3 win over second placed
Xerez on Sunday lunchtime. The Basque side defended well in the opening
minutes, and took the lead when top scorer Llorente ran on to a long ball to
beat Julio Iglesias. The keeper made a good save from the Basque striker after
the break, and Raúl Molina shot over the bar at the other end soon
afterwards. But Llorente made it two with twenty minutes to go, his tenth goal
of the season, and Moisés added a third soon afterwards to complete the
rout. Xerez tried for a late consolation but Mena, Lekic and Camuñas all
failed to find the target, and the Andalusian side fell to their second defeat
in a row and their first at home this season.
Alavés move up
level with Xerez after a 1-1 draw at Málaga B, also at midday on
Sunday. It was a game of two halves, with the locals on top completely during
the first half. Visiting keeper Bonano saved an early Paco Esteban penalty
after the striker was brought down by Coromina, but could do nothing to stop
Abel's free kick midway through the half. The young midfielder could have made
it two with another free kick which struck the crossbar, but after that the
visitors came back, and Silva had to clear an effort from Rubén Navarro
off the line with Javi Muñoz beaten. And twenty minutes in to the second
half Alavés equalised when Muñoz came out his area but could only
head Navarro's effort as far as Epitié, who turned it back into the net.
Only two points separate
eight sides from second to ninth though in what is proving to be another close
league. Cádiz moved up to fourth, just a point outside of the
promotion spots, after a comfortable 1-3 victory at Salamanca on Sunday
evening. The Andalusians raced into a two goal lead within the opening seven
minutes, De Quintana heading home a corner and Jonathan Sesma picking up Dani
Navarrete's pass to score the second moments later. Deus pulled one back midway
through the first half from Jacobo's through ball, and Aurelio and Mario both
hit the bar after the break as the home side pushed forward for the draw. But
they were caught out by a rapid counter-attack near the end, and Enrique set up
Pavoni to wrap things up with a third goal. The defeat takes Salamanca back to
within a point of the drop zone, although the board of directors confirmed
manager Felipe Miñambres in his post after the game.
Elche are just behind
Cádiz on goal difference after a 1-0 win over Real Murcia, the
only goal coming from a controversial penalty in injury time. Both sides had
their chances, the locals going closest with efforts from Noguerol, Txiki and
Rubén Suárez, and Iván Alonso replying for the visitors.
Penalty appeals on Moisés and Richi had also been turned down by
Castillo Estévez at both ends, but with the game in injury time the
referee ruled that Richi had handled in the area and Nino converted the
resulting spot kick. Visiting manager Manolo Preciado was sent off for
protesting the decision, and he was followed before the final whistle by two of
his players Acciari and Maciel after both picked up second bookings.
Racing Ferrol are
also level with Cádiz and Elche after picking up a valuable point in a
0-0 draw at Poli Ejido. Despite the result there were several
opportunities, particularly from the locals, for whom Calado tested Bello Amigo
two or three times, and also set up Corona and Enguix for efforts which went
close. The Australia born keeper also stood up well to Toedtli in the second
half, and kept out a last minute header from Carlos García. Local keeper
Kike also had to be on his toes though to keep out shots from Mario Bermejo and
Flavio in each half.
Valladolid beat
Recreativo 1-0 to make it five games in a row without defeat, taking
Sergio Kresic's side up into the top half of the table. Sousa was the danger
man early on, and the goal came when his shot was blocked by a defender, Hornos
scoring in the follow up (although the visitors protested that the ball had not
completely crossed the line). Hornos went close later in the half, and the
visitors didn't react until late in the game, when Cheli and Baquero both tried
their luck. In the end though a good result for the locals to follow up their
midweek cup victory against Racing Santander, even though Jonathan was sent off
in the dying minutes for a second bookable offence.
Tenerife beat
Sporting Gijón by the same score, a late strike by Jesús
Vázquez enough to give them the three points. It was a dull match
though, with little action until the second half when Juan and Ismael both
tested Keleman in the local goal, and Kiko Ratón headed the best chance
for the locals just wide of the post. The game finally picked up pace as both
sides went for the victory, but Vázquez won it for the hosts after
Roberto could only block an effort from Vitolo.
Almería won
0-2 at Pontevedra to move up to the top half of the table and send the
Galicians further down into the relegation zone. The locals haven't won in
their Pasarón stadium all season, and they fell behind just before half
time when Vellisca picked up a poor clearance by Moso to drive the ball back
into the net. Iban Espadas headed a second after the break to give José
Aurelio Gay's side their fourth defeat in a row.
Pontevedra drop below
Ciudad Murcia, who were held to a 1-1 draw at home by Gimnastic
Tarragona. The visitors took the lead on the stroke of half time, Bolo
beating keeper Javi Fernández (who had spent the previous night in jail
after his wife accused him of mistreating her). Güiza headed the equaliser
midway through the second half and Cuevas almost put the locals ahead when
Alfonso cleared his effort off the line with the keeper beaten. But Cuevas and
then Espejo were both sent off for second bookable offences in the last five
minutes, leaving the home side with nine men. (14.11.04) |
