Villarreal bounced back from their midweek defeat at Osasuna to thrash Getafe 4-0 and move back up to the top four. Pellegrini's side were missing the suspended Riquelme, but for once they didn't need him as they raced into a two goal lead with just over a quarter of an hour on the clock. Sorín opened the scoring after Quique Alvarez headed down a corner, and Diego Forlán added the second when he got on the end of Figueroa's shot-come-centre to slide the ball in off Pernía. And it could have been more by half time, Figueroa in particular having a header tipped over the bar by Sánchez Broto and then hitting the bar with another shot.

Apart from a first minute strike from Michel which was ruled out for offside and a header off target by Pulido, the visitors had hardly troubled Reina in the local goal. Quique Flores tried to change things, bringing on Yordi and Albiol at the break, but within a minute his side had gone further behind when youth international Cazorla fired a long shot past the keeper. And five minutes later Forlán made it four when he got on the end of Sorín's cross after Figueroa had failed to connect, taking the ex Manchester United striker to within two goals of leading scorer Eto'o. Getafe's challenge ended when Yordi limped off a few minutes later, and although they are all but safe, the Madrid based side still need a point or two to be mathematically sure of first division football next season.
