Valencia moved up into the
top four pending Sunday's games after a 1-1 draw at Numancia, although Antonio
López's side were disappointed with a result which they expected to go
in their favour. The visitors could make no inroad into a well disciplined
defence though in a first half in which the only chances were a long shot off
target from Carlos Merino and a couple of efforts by the Chés, a header
wide by Ayala following a corner and a curling shot from Aimar just over the
top of the bar.
Baraja went close after the
restart with an angled shot which just brushed the foot of the far post, but
López decided to make a couple of changes early in the second half,
bringing on Di Vaio and also Vicente, the winger making his first appearance
for several months after a serious ankle injury.
Almost immediately Di Vaio
broke free on to see his shot saved by Juanma, but a few minutes later the
locals took the lead, Juanlu cutting in from the left past a couple of
defenders before passing in for Tevenet to shoot low past Palop. But eight
minutes later referee Moreno Delgado awarded a hotly protested penalty after
Graff held on to Angulo, and Vicente stepped up to drive home the spot kick.
The result virtually ensures that the Soria based side will be relegated, and
they could be mathematically down if Levante can pick up points on Sunday.
