Low diving header past Munúa from Garrido's cross.
Deportivo kicked off the
last game on Saturday knowing that the teams above them had faltered, and that
they could close up on the European positions if they could defeat Real
Sociedad in an Anoeta stadium where they had not lost in six years. And they
could have gone ahead early on had Munitis not failed to beat Riesgo when free
on goal. However the Basque side rallied after that, and after Mikel Alonso
shot wide and Munitis cleared an effort from Kovacevic off the line, Uranga
flung himself forward to meet Garrido's cross and head past Munúa.
Real suffered a blow when
Riesgo was taken off with concussion midway through the second half, but his
replacement Alberto only had a couple of saves to make, most notably from
Sergio after the restart. Sergio might have scored as well a few minutes later
when he ran on to Munitis's pass, but the ball came to him too strongly and he
was unable to steer his shot on target.
A desperate Irureta finally
resorted to young striker Xisco, the first B team player he has used in the
league in his seven years at the club, but it was to no avail, and Kovacevic
could have increased the lead when he beat the offside trap but could not find
a way round Munúa. But shortly after Luque missed a final chance,
referee Pino Zamorano called it a day, and Depor went home empty handed.
