With most of the teams above
them failing to win, Zaragoza moved back to within four points of the UEFA
positions after beating bottom club Numancia 4-1. The game was preceded by a
parade by both sets of neighbouring fans who mixed together freely throughout
the game. But they had little to cheer about in a dull first half in which both
keepers had little to do, the best chances shots wide by Movilla and
Toché at either end.
Víctor Muñoz
had reserved Galletti at the start, but he decided he couldn't wait any longer
and brought him on at the break. And it proved the turning point of the game as
the team captain set up Villa for him to start off a wave of goals with just
over an hour gone. The visitors equalised three minutes later when Cani shot
past his own keeper whilst trying to clear, but almost immediately Zaragoza
were back in front when Villa controlled a long pass from the right and turned
his man before curling a shot past Juanma.
After that the Soria based
side's resistance crumbled, and Ponzio added a third goal after fellow
Argentines Milito and Galletti combined to set him up. And Savio made it four
before the end after beating the offside trap to lift the ball over the
advancing keeper. It could have been more in the end, but the fans were too
busy enjoying themselves to care, knowing that, with Numancia now eleven points
away from safety, it may be some time before they see each other again.
