Atlético Madrid are
up to eighth after a comfortable 4-0 win over Mallorca. The result could have
been different though if a headed goal by Farinós had not been ruled out
for offside and if Leo Franco had not saved an effort from Jorge López
soon afterwards, but Atlético didn't look back after the 25th minute,
when a team move from deep inside their own half resulted in Colsa firing a
long shot past the keeper after a clever back-heel pass from Ibagaza. The ball
took a slight deflection off the body of Salva, who was awarded the strike by
referee González Vázquez.
Fernando Torres should have
got a second a few minutes after the restart after he ran past the defence only
to shoot wide of the goal. But soon afterwards he did get his name on the
scoresheet from the penalty spot after Ballesteros brought him down in the
penalty area, the action earning the defender a direct red card.
Things got worse for the
visitors a quarter of an hour later when Iulano was sent off for the second
time this season after picking up a second booking, and only good goalkeeping
by Moyà kept out Torres and Salva. But their resistance eventually
crumbled, and Salva completed his hat-trick with two goals in as many minutes
from crosses by Molinero, the first a spectacular volley and the second an easy
tap-in. Atlético's European campaign was back on track, but
Héctor Cúper's side return home a step closer to relegation,
still seven points adrift of the teams above them. |
