Valencia dropped out of the Champions' League spots after losing 1-0 at Racing Santander, and Ranieri's side have now only picked up two points since the turn of the season five games ago.

The rainy conditions made play difficult, and there few very few opportunities for either side before the break. Di Vaio shot into the side netting from a wide angle and then headed over the bar either side of half time, but it was the home side who took the lead when Regueiro bent a long free kick over the defensive wall past Palop.

Mista came close to equalising a couple of times, shooting just wide and then bringing a good save out of Aouate, but Anderson could have extended the lead following a corner when Palop somehow got a hand to his header.

It was a first win for caretaker manager Nando Yosu, who had reverted back to Lucas Alcaraz's system with three central defenders after the disastrous result the week before. The victory takes the Cantabriabs above Mallorca and Albacete and out of the relegation zone, safe for the time being at least.
