Real Madrid kept up the pace with leaders Barcelona after beating Mallorca 3-1 in the last match on Sunday evening. Luxemburgo put out a new diamond shaped formation in midfield, with Gravesen at the back, Beckham on the right and Figo given a free role behind Raúl and Ronaldo. And after having a first penalty appeal turned down for a foul by Moyà on Raúl, referee Daudén Ibáñez pointed to the spot after a high tackle by Pereyra on Roberto Carlos. Figo converted the kick to give his side the lead, but Campano caught out Casillas with a free kick to level the scores before the break.

Mallorca's goal came from virtually their first shot at goal, and with the scores back level they continued to sit back and wait for their opponents. Héctor Cúper brought on Okubo for Romeo, but almost immediately his side were left with ten men when debutant Iuliano picked up a second booking for a foul on his old rival Ronaldo. The manager replaced Jorge López with Nadal to restore the back four, abandoning any hope of what would have been a record third win in a row at the Bernabeu.

The ten men held on as long as they could, but ten minutes from the end Samuel (who had broken his nose in a clash of heads with Romeo in the early minutes) poked home a loose ball in the area to restore the lead. Substitute Michael Owencould have got a couple more before Solari added a third in injury time with a spectacular strike. The result keeps "Los Galacticos" within seven points of the leaders, and leaves the Balearic Islanders further down in the drop zone.
