A depleted Espanyol side
saved a valuable point after drawing 1-1 at Athletic Bilbao. Injuries and
suspensions meant that Lotina had to play youngsters Corominas and Jonathan up
front. But they found themselves behind in only the third minute from a Yeste
free kick which Etxeberría appeared to get a touch to, but which in the
end was awarded to Yeste as the ball bounced straight past Kameni in to the
net.
Athletic had their own
injury problems, and with Urzaiz injured, youngster Fernando Llorente was given
his first team debut up front. The youth international brought a good save out
of Kameni, and after Yeste and Ezquerro had also gone close, Lotina decided to
change his side around, bringing on Soldevilla in front of the back four
allowing De la Peña to push forward to his natural position. It proved
to be an inspired move, as three minutes later De la Peña combined with
Amavisca to set up Maxi for the equaliser.
The hosts regrouped after
the restart though, and Kameni had to be at his best to save from Llorente and
Ezquerro. Ibarra cleared another effort from Llorente off the line with the
keeper beaten, and Etxeberría put another shot just wide of the post.
But the Catalans held on, and ensured a point which keeps them in the
Champions' League positions for another week. |
