Real Madrid closed the gap
on leaders Barcelona to seven points after beating city neighbours
Atlético Madrid 0-3 in their local derby on Sunday evening. Vanderlei
Luxemburgo was in charge for the for the first time (Wednesday's six minutes
excepted), and he had no qualms bringing in B team right back Arbeloa to
replace the suspended Salgado, with Solari replacing Guti at the last minute
after the midfielder pulled out with a stomach upset.
It was a strange match
though, with Atlético doing most of the attacking but Madrid scoring
virtually every time they approached the goal. Casillas was in action right
from the start to keep out Fernando Torres, who passed a late fitness test on
the rib he cracked before Christmas to play. With less than a quarter of an
hour gone though the visitors were in front, Zidane swinging a foot at Roberto
Carlos's cross and missing, but putting off the defence enough to give Ronaldo
time to fire a shot into the roof of the net.
For the rest of the first
half the locals bore down on their opponents goal, Ibagaza putting a delightful
chip just over the bar and Salva heading wide. Casillas saved the day twice
just before the break, the first from Salva (Torres blasting the rebound over
the bar with the goal at his mercy) and then from Torres himself. And the
keeper kept it up into the second half with stops from new boy Grokjaer and a
couple of times again from Torres.
But inevitably Madrid
wrapped things up in the last ten minutes, Solari running on to Raúl's
short pass to round Leo Franco and score, and Ronaldo taking a pinpoint pass
from Zidane to find a gap under the keeper's legs. The press afterwards renamed
"Los Galacticos" as "Real Madrid de-luxe" after the new manager had clocked up
six points in 96 minutes of football. A perfect start for the new management
team, and their side move up level with second placed Valencia.
