Athletic Bilbao made it four
victories in just two weeks with a 4-0 win over struggling Mallorca. Ernesto
Valverde's side have been on a roll recently, and with only ten minutes gone
they were already two up, Yeste started things off with a rare headed goal in
the sixth minute, and Ezquerro scoring his sixth in the last three games after
getting on the end of Yeste's free kick a few minutes later. Orbaiz could have
had a third when he hit the post, and Exteberría wasted another chance
close to half time.
Mallorca did come back for a
brief spell either side of half time, Aranzubia saving from Luis García
before the break and Arango and Jesús Perera both failing to convert
chances after the restart. But Gurpegui added a well constructed third after
Ezquerro and Etxeberría combined to set him up, and Yeste rounded things
off from the penalty spot after referee Rubinos Pérez rather harshly
ruled that Poli had handled deliberately in the area. The full back was shown a
second card in the incident, but by then it didn't matter much as the game was
already over. It was a third defeat in a row for Héctor Cúper's
side, and they drop further down into the relegation spots as a result.
