Espanyol moved up to second
place in the table after a 2-1 win over Mallorca in the last game on Sunday
evening. The match got off to a lively start, with both sides creating chances.
Ramis cut out Tamudo as he advanced on goal, and Dani's header was saved by
Moya, who was returning to the Mallorca goal in place of Westerveld.
Farinós shot wide at the other end and Delibasic had a penalty appeal
turned down, and David Cortés cleared a double effort from Dani away
with the keeper beaten soon afterwards.
Cortés made another
desperate clearance from Dani's header following a corner a few minutes later,
but this time he could do no more than steer it towards Pochettino, who headed
it back into the net. Jorge López had a chance to level the scores from
the penalty spot almost immediately after Ibarra barged over Arango, but Kameni
saved his kick and reacted quickly enough to deflect his follow up shot onto
the post. It was the Camerooni's third penalty save of the season after
stopping kicks from Ronaldo and Baptista earlier in the current campaign.
Let off the hook, Oscar
Serrano made it two before half time, shooting past Moyá after De la
Peña ran through from the half way line and chipped a shot onto the
crossbar. Kameni saved an effort from Delibasic before the break, but he was
eventually beaten on the hour mark when Pereyra got on the end of Camapno's
free kick to score.
After that though the game
slowed down, De la Peña's skills missed by the home side after he bowed
out of the match at the interval with an upset stomach. Farinós could
have equalised late on had Ibarra not got back to clear his shot off the line,
but it was not to be and Héctor Cúper's side stay down in the
bottom three. On today's showing though, they won't be there too long.
