Real Sociedad put an end to Betis's run of ten games without defeat, Kovacevic getting the only goal for the Basques in a 1-0 victory. The visitors got off to a good start, Marcos Assunçao testing Riesgo with a long free kick and Juanito heading over the bar from a corner. But Doblas had to be at his best to keep out a shot from Karpin at the other end, and ten minutes before the break Kovacevic picked up a ball in from Gabilondo to chip the keeper and open the scoring.

Oliveira had a chance to level the scores soon after the restart, but he put his shot over the bar. Nihat could have increased the lead though on a couple of occasions after that, Doblas pushing out his dipping shot, and a few minutes later blocking another effort with his feet. Serra Ferrer threw on reinforcements, and Assunçao sent a last minute free kick just over the top. But Real held on for three points which takes them safely up to mid-table.
