Deportivo La Coruña's
disappointing season continues, and they threw away a two goal lead to end up
drawing 2-2 with Real Sociedad. The Galicians were looking to build on their
two victories in a row in the league and shrug off their elimination from
Europe, and Luque put them ahead on the quarter hour mark from a free kick
after the referee ruled that Riesgo had carried the ball out of the area. Luiz
Alberto and Nihat both put Molina to the test at the other end, but Munitis
headed a second goal for Depor, Luque this time the creator with a good run
down the left wing.
The home side's fortunes
were about to change though, and Luque limped off with an injury shortly after
the second goal. And seconds later Nihat pulled one back when he curled a free
kick wide of the keeper inside the post. Five minutes after the interval
Kovacevic made it all square when he got on the end of Karpin's cross to head
past Molina, and Real were back in the match.
Both sides could have scored
after that, with Nihat shooting straight at the keeper when free on goal and
Scaloni missing an easy chance for the hosts. Three minutes from the end Karpin
was sent off after picking up a second booking for applauding a hostile crowd
when being substituted, but even so Molina had to save a last minute effort
from Mikel Alonso. Depor had missed out on a chance to return to the top six,
and will have to improve if they want to return to Europe next season.
