A freak goal in the last minute of the match gave Numancia a first league win in eight games and left Sevilla out of the Champions League spots. With scores tied at one apiece Antonio took a long free kick from inside his own half, and the wind took it on the first bounce over the head of Esteban and in to the net. The player himself didn't know that he was the goalscorer until later on, and his strike was measured at a new record for the league of 65 metres.

Caretaker manager Máximo Hernández took over from the sacked Francisco at the start of the week and had already seen his team scrape through in the cup against Córdoba. The new coach made three changes, but only an effort from Osorio troubled the opposing defence in the first half, and they could have gone behind near the break when Juanma pushed a Fernando Sales shot against the post.

Juanma was at fault though early in the second half when he hesitated too long and saw his attempted clearance charged down by Puerta, the ball looping up and back into the net to put the visitors in front. Esteban did well though at the other end to keep out a dangerous shot from Carlos Merino, and Osorio levelled the scores with a forceful header after the defence could only sky the ball following a corner. Then came Antonio's fluke, and the Soria based side were off the bottom of the table at last.
