Sevilla drop to fourth after
they were held to a 1-1 draw by struggling Mallorca, a good start for the
visitors' new manager Héctor Cúper who had only just returned to
take over the side after Benito Floro was sacked a few days ago. Cúper
only made a couple of changes in defence, one of which was forced upon him by
an injury to keeper Moyà, but his team put in a steady performance to
earn themselves a much needed point.
The early chances fell to
the locals, Baptista heading one chance over the bar and having another effort
cleared off the line by a defender with Westerveld beaten, and the keeper had
to make another save later on from Aranda.
Caparrós made two
changes at the break to strengthen his attack, but the visitors could have
scored on the breakaway, Esteban stopping an Arango header and Perera having a
penalty appeal turned down. Eventually though Sevilla took the lead following a
great team move, Baptista finally passing the ball out to half time sub Antonio
López for him to fire a shot under Westerveld.
The lead only lasted seven
minutes though before Mallorca equalised, Pereyra getting on the end of a long
free kick to flick on a header which Baptista tried to clear, but only
succeeded in nodding past his own keeper. The home side could have restored the
lead had the referee decided to award a penalty when Westerveld brought down
Carlos, but it was not to be and both sides had to settle for a point.
