Mallorca's poor start to the
season continued, and they stay down in the bottom three after a last minute
1-2 defeat at the hands of Racing Santander. Caretaker manager Tomeu Llompart
was in charge for the first time at home after Benito Floro was sacked earlier
in the week, and he put out a more balanced side with Luis García and
Jesús Perera up front. But within two minutes they were behind when
Nadal failed to clear a cross from the left, Pedro López picking up the
loose ball and rounding his man to score.
The Cantabrians could have
been further ahead by the break, with Arango in particular hitting the post and
having a penalty appeal turned down. Llompart made two changes at half time,
brining on Tuni and Fernando Niño, but within ten minutes Niño
was off again after being shown a red card for a hard tackle on Benayoun. But
that appeared to inspire Mallorca, and with ten minutes to go Jorge
López drilled home the equaliser after the defence only half cleared a
cross.
It seemed that they had at
least saved a point, but in injury time Racing produced a 3 on 1 breakaway, and
Nafti slid the ball through for Benayoun to round Moyà and score the
winning goal. It was another bitter blow for the fans, but management had
already taken steps to find the solution, announcing during the day that
Héctor Cúper will be returning to take over the reins at the
Balearic Island club. He will certainly have his work cut out if he is to turn
things around. |
