Kovacevic. Got above defence to head Karpin cross wide of Leo Franco.
Real Sociedad climbed out of
the relegation zone after beating Atlético Madrid 1-0, their first
victory of the season. Amorrortu's side were desperate for a win, and thought
they should have had a penalty in the first minute when Kovacevic fell under
Molinero's challenge. Atlético had never won in San Sebastian since Real
moved to the Anoeta stadium, but they could have taken the lead when Jorge
headed Musampa's cross just wide of the post. But Nihat came close at the other
end when García Calvo deflected his shot in to the side netting, and
Colsa almost put through his own net when he deflected Rossato's cross onto his
own corssbar. Real finally took the lead though four minutes before the
interval, Kovacevic opening his account for the season from Karpin's weighted
cross.
The visitors were missing
the injured Salva and Ibagaza and didn't cause too many problems, although
Fernando Torres could have levelled the scores had he been able to get on the
end of Simeone's header across goal soon after the restart. Nihat almost
squeezed a free kick past Leo Franco though, and Rossato should have done
better when Kovacevic put him through, the Brazilian putting his shot wide. But
the visitors came close to saving a point in the dying minutes, Jorge's
indirect free kck coming back off the bar with nobody in a position to finish
off, and Antonio López firing a shot against the post in injury time on
a quick counter-attack. |
