A first win of the season for Betis took the pressure off manager Lorenzo Serra Ferrer and left their opponents Athletic Bilbao down in the bottom three. Arriaga had chance to put the visitors ahead when his shot was blocked by Prats, but it was the home team who took the lead when Juanito scrambled the ball into the net following a Joaquín corner. Before the fsn had time to celebrate Athletic had equalised though, Yeste winning his way past two defenders before slotting the ball across for Urzaiz to score into an empty net. Fernando restored the lead after the break, heading Joaquín's cross down past Aranzubia, and they held on to take the three points despite a close miss from Urzaiz near the end.
