Numancia moved
further ahead at the top of the second division, coming from a goal down to win
2-1 win against Tenerife. The Soria based side went behind on the
quarter hour mark when Antonio put through his own net, the first goal they
have let in at the Pajaritos stadium this season. Manager Quique
Hernández immediately took off both full backs, and he got his reward
for his bravery when the referee awarded a penalty after Djukic handled in the
area close to half time. Pineda scored from the spot but was forced to retake
the kick as players had encroached on the area, and Alvaro saved his second
attempt. However Culebras scored from the resulting corner to level the scores.
The visitors were left with ten men when Ismael was sent off for a second
yellow after the break, and not long after Juan Carlos Moreno put the locals
ahead with a free kick. Before the game ended though, Kome and Jesús
Vázquez were sent off for fighting, and Tenerife ended with eight on the
park after Iker Garai also got his marching orders for a second booking.
Third placed
Almería lost the chance to keep up with the leaders after
Elche came back with two late goals to draw 3-3. Lago had put the
visitors ahead in the seventh minute, and although Dani Tortolero equalised
four minutes before the break with a shot from the edge of the area, Jorge
Pérez restored the lead a minute later. Francisco got a third for the
visitors after the restart, and it looked as if manager Cantarero was going to
follow in the footsteps of Castro Santos (Córdoba) and Orué
(Xerez), both of whom were fired after their clubs lost to the Andalucians. But
Cuéllear pulled one back with ten minutes to go and Moisés headed
a last minute equaliser to save the head of their manager for the time being.
Las Palmas finally
got their first home victory in their new Gran Canaria stadium at the eighth
time of trying, beating Córdoba 3-1. The visitors looked like
they could be on for their fifth victory in a row under manager Miguel Angel
Portugal when Montenegro gave them the lead as early as the third minute. The
crowd got on the players' backs when they went off at half time, but a minute
after the restart Carmelo took advantage of Rubén Castro's pass to level
the scores, and Nico Frutos put them ahead midway through the second half with
his first league goal for his new club. The visitors tried to fight back, but
Rubén Castro finished them off with a cracking goal from Jotha's pass
near the end, his tenth of the season.
Terrassa have yet to
win in their Olympic stadium, and they fell again on Saturday evening, losing
1-2 to Getafe. Alberto put the visitors ahead with a shot from outside
of the area with a quarter of an hour gone, and Michel added a second from the
penalty spot when Padilla brought down Alberto after the half time interval.
Visiting keeper Aragoneses (linked with a possible return to Atlético
Madrid this winter) made a couple of vital stops from Molist, and Gallego
pulled one back near the end with a dipping shot. The Catalans ended the game
with ten men after Quique Martín picked up a second booking late on.
Even so, Maikel could have saved a point when he hit the bar in the last
minute. (29.11.03)
The battle for the
promotion spots is hotting up, with only three points separating six sides
after Sunday's matches were finished. Cádiz dropped a place to
fifth after they drew 0-0 at Salamanca on Sunday lunchtime, a match
which was spoilt by the heavy rainfall and the wet, muddy conditions of the
pitch. The only scoring chance in the first half fell to the home side,
José heading wide shortly before the break, and visiting striker Oli was
tackled by Lupidio at the last minute after the break preventing him from
scoring. The locals felt they should have had a penalty for hand ball late on,
but Mario Rosas could have won it for the visitors in the last minute if Stelea
had not made a vital save.
Sporting Gijon are
just a point behind the Andalucians after they won 1-3 at Leganés
in their Sunday midday game. It was third home defeat in a row for the Madrid
based side, who have yet to win in their Butarque stadium and who finished the
weekend down in sixteenth spot. They did get off to a good start, Borja heading
home Txiki's corner early on, but Alessandria got himself sent off midway
through the first half allowing the visitors to come back. Pablo Alvarez
levelled the scores for the Asturians after the break, Rubén put them in
front with a free kick and Alvarez got his second and his team's third near the
end to take them up to seventh.
Levante produced
another goal-less draw on Sunday evening, this time against Recreativo
Huelva, to hold on to second spot above Almería on goal difference.
The Valencia based side have only let in four goals all season, whilst their
opponents have now shared the points ten times in fourteen games. The game
itself was lively, although defences were on top for much of the ninety
minutes. Pinillos hit the post for the locals before the break and Jofre
created a couple of chances, but visiting keeper Toño was up to the
task. Recre's only effort on target came from an Iker Begoña header
following a corner which Mora saved. The result leaves Numancia four points
clear at the top of the table.
Eibar are a
surprising fourth, two points behind the promotion spots, after beating
Ciudad de Murcia 1-3. The locals went ahead midway through the first
half when Güiza got on the end of a pass from Camuñas, but five
minutes later Gorka Brit was brought down in the penalty area and made it all
square from the resulting spot kick. The ex Osasuna striker added a second a
quarter of an hour from the end, and a few minutes later Joseba Llorente made
it three. This was Ciudad's third defeat in a row, and manager Lillo may soon
become the eighth second division boss to lose his job this season.
Poli Ejido were the
last side to change their manager, Julián Rubio surprisingly taking over
this week even though management had said that assistant coach José
María Salmerón would be given the job vacated by Quique
Setién. Little good it did them though, as they fell by 1-3 to
Alavés, who ended the day level with Eibar and Cádiz
within sight of the top three. Unlike the other two games which finished with
this result this weekend, the visitors took the lead first, Iván Alanso
getting on the end of Astudillo's cross to drill a shot past Manu. Poli were
left with ten men when Arturo was sent off near to half time, but even so
Calado hit the bar soon after the restart. But Alavés pushed on and
scored twice more, Turiel making it two following a corner and De Lucas setting
up Magno for a third. David Prats got a late consolation goal for the home
side.
Rayo Vallecano
shouldn't be ruled out of the promotion race just yet though, and they made it
three wins in a row under new manager Jorge D'Alessandro after coming from a
goal down to beat Málaga B 2-1. The visitors went ahead when
Ricardo Cavas put through his own net trying to clear Robi's cross, but
straight from the kick off Biagini ran on to a long ball to equalize, his third
goal in as many matches. Visiting keeper Goitia saved from Bolo and Biagini,
and substitute Márques hit the post after the break as the rain started
to fall heavily. But Bolo finished off a good team effort to hit the winner,
and Etxeberría saved the day in the last minute, stopping a header from
Castro.
Xerez's new coach
Esteban Vigo is also having early success, and his side climb out of the
relegation spots to the detriment of Málaga B after a 2-1 win over
bottom club Algeciras. The visitors took the lead early in the first
half when Armentano got on the end of Bayarri's free kick, but Jurado equalised
before the break after Calle set him up. Algeciras were left with ten men
though soon after the restart when Bayarri was shown a second yellow, and Calle
hit the winner for the locals later in the half after good work by Del Pino and
Mendoza. A minute later Espinola joined Bayarri in an early bath after he was
shown a red card for elbowing local striker Deus, and it was all over.
