Second Division A - Day 9

Ciudad de Murcia beat Rayo Vallecano 2-1 in a match brought forward to Friday night in view of Real Murcia's match in the same stadium later in the weekend. All three goals came in the second half after Rayo's Pablo Sanz was sent off, with the locals opening the scoring when Güiza headed Manel's cross past Etxeberría on the hour mark. Aguilar got a second from a Camuñas pass before Idiakez scored a late consolation goal for the visitors. This was Ciudad's first home win since winning promotion to the second division A, and leaves Rayo manager Julen Lopetegui's job hanging on a thread. (24.10.03)

Numancia moved to the top of the table with a 2-0 win over Elche on Saturday night, their fourth victory in a row. The Soria based side were far superior to their rivals, although they didn't open the scoring until a quarter of an hour in to the second half when Fagiani's free kick took a deflection off the defensive wall to wrong foot Dani Mallo. Miguel Pérez scored a second ten minutes to later keep up their unbeaten record at home, where they have yet to let in a goal.

Eibar moved up to fifth after coming from behind to beat bottom club Terrassa 3-1. Visiting striker Maikel hit the bar with the goal at his mercy in the first half, but made up for his miss with a headed goal soon after the restart. The Catalans were left with ten men though when Héctor picked up a second booking, and a minute later Garitano headed an equaliser. Cuevas put the locals ahead a few minutes later, and substitute Brit finished things off with a late penalty.

Algeciras saved a point with two goals in the last four minutes in a 2-2 draw with Recreativo. The heavy rainfall made play difficult, but the visitors took the lead through Uche ten minutes before the interval. Toedtli scored a second goal after the restart, and it looked as if Recre were heading for their first win in the Nuevo Mirador in 34 years. But Armentano pulled one back from the penalty spot after Luque brought down Dani, and Sequeiros made it all square in injury time from Zárate's overhead pass. Recre's Iker Begoña was sent off right at the end for a second booking, and the Huelva based side have now drawn their last six games. (25.10.03)

A late goal by Francisco gave fourth placed Almería a 1-0 win over last week's leaders Levante in a game which kicked off at midday. Despite the lack of goals it was an open game, with Francisco and Jaime going close for the locals before the break and the defence clearing from Congo at the other end. The visitors were left with ten men though on the hour mark when Descarga picked up a second caution, and Preciado pulled his men back to defend the point. However Francisco beat Mora five minutes from the end to keep up his side's unbeaten record and take them above their opponents up to second place.

A sixth draw out of eight games for both Getafe and Salamanca, who tied 1-1 in their Sunday morning match. The locals opened the scoring in the tenth minute when Alberto headed home Miguel Angel's cross, his side's first goal in five games. But Raúl Sánchez took advantage of a defensive mistake to level the scores before half time. Uranga was sent off for the home side for elbowing an opponent midway through the second half, but Craioveanu almost gave them a win when he hit the bar later on.

Cádiz lost 1-2 to Leganés on Sunday evening, their first home defeat of the season. The home side started strongly, but the visitors defended well and Txiki put them ahead with a well struck free kick ten minutes before the break, their first goal not scored by an Argentine player this season. Pavoni set up Oli for an equaliser five minutes after the restart, but ex Celta and Tenerife striker Turdó headed the winner three minutes from the end. The defeat means Cádiz drop out of the top three to fourth, albeit level on points with Levante.

Alavés moved up to fifth after a last minute own goal gave them a 1-0 win over Córdoba. The Vitoria based side should have gone ahead in the first half from the penalty spot after a defender handled the ball in the area, but visiting keeper Jauregui made a spectacular save from Kiko's kick. The Andalucians had Larrainzar sent off five minutes from the end after he was shown a second yellow card, and with the game coming to a close, ex Alavés defender Berruet headed past his own keeper trying to clear. The result leaves Córdoba still down in the bottom four, and manager Castro Santos was sacked the following day.

A second minute strike from Rubén Castro gave Las Palmas a 0-1 win at Málaga B, who like Córdoba have yet to win a match this season. The under 21 international striker latched on to Momo's cross in his side's first attack to slot the ball past Lara for his eighth of the season. Keeper Cicovic did the rest to give the Islanders their second win of the season, although they did end with nine men on the field after Paqui was shown a red card in a late brawl involving several players and Jotha followed him with a second yellow card in injury time.

A disappointing Tenerife lost by the same result to Poli Ejido, and miss out on the chance of closing up on the leaders. The only goal came from the penalty spot midway through the second half after Aarón brought down ex Osasuna forward Sabino, Calado converting the kick. This was Tenerife's first defeat of the season, and the result takes Ejido out of the relegation spots, much to the relief of manager Quique Setién.

Sporting Gijon moved up seven places to the top half of the table with a 3-0 win over Xerez, their best result of the season to date. The locals overcame the wet weather to open the scoring through Juan, who beat Unanua with a long shot on the stroke of half time. Xerez were reduced to ten men half an hour in to the second half when Borja got a second booking, and Bouzá headed home Ismael's cross minutes later. And Dani Borreguero drove him a third near the end to hand the Andalucians their first defeat of the season. (26.10.03)
