A last second free kick form
Nano saved a point for a poor Atlético Madrid against bottom club Real
Murcia. Visiting manager John Toshack drafted three youngsters in to his side
after a string of poor results, and put out a new formation with three lines of
three to pack midfield and snuff out the danger from Ibagaza and Jorge. And for
a long time the move worked, albeit sacrificing attractive football, with
Atlético only really going close to goal in the first 45 minutes when
Bonano tipped a deflected shot from Nikolaidis on to the post.
The introduction of Gancedo
before the break created more problems for the locals, and Esnaider should have
put his side in front when he shot weakly with the goal at his mercy. Sergi hit
the bar at the other end, but a couple of minutes later Simeone fouled Luis
García from behind as he lined up to shoot and the ex Real Madrid
forward converted the resulting penalty. The home side were left with ten men
when Jorge got sent off for insulting a linesman later on, but just when Murcia
looked to be in line for only their third win of the season and their first
away from home, Nano struck his last gasp equaliser. Not a great result, but
for the time being at least Atlético are still in the UEFA cup spots.
