Atlético Madrid regained their sixth spot after losing it to Betis for 24 hours with a last minute win over Mallorca. The home side were full of confidence after their Thursday night UEFA cup win at Spartak Moscow, and they went straight on the offensive, with Colsa and Eto'o testing Aragoneses early on. But midway through the first half Ibagaza sent Fernando Torres away on a first attack, and local keeper Leo Franco handled the ball outside of his area in an attempt to stop the young striker. Referee Rodríguez Santiago had no doubts, and Franco was shown the red card.

Even so though Atlético were unable to make much headway, and only an effort from Nano late in the first half caused any problems for substitute keeper Miki. Fernando Torres did get the ball in the net after the break but his strike was ruled out for a dubious offside. But just when it seemed that a draw was on the cards, Torres broke away down the left wing and chipped a glorious shot over the head of the advancing keeper. With other results going against them, Mallorca now find themselves only a place above the relegation spots.
