Real Madrid moved eight
points clear at the top of the table after coming from behind to beat Celta
4-2. It was a poor first half by the league champions, and the visitors went
into the lead on the quarter hour mark when Ilic finished off after Mostovoi's
corner was headed on, his first goal for his new club. The Galicians could have
had more if Edu had not shot wide before the goal and Milosevic had not failed
to beat Casillas soon after the restart. But Zidane gave a wake up call to
Pinto with a long shot which the keeper saved at full stretch shortly before
the break, and Ronaldo made it all square nine minutes in to the second half
after the keeper could only push away Beckham's header.
Casillas had to save again
from Milosevic a few minutes later, but Zidane got on the end of Figo's
pinpoint cross to head his side into the lead, and Figo himself scored a third
after picking up a long ball over the top from Beckham and running on to beat
Pinto from a wide angle. Queiroz decided to give a rest to tired legs, and with
Portillo left out of the squad, young winger Antonio Nuñez came on as
makeshift centre forward. Milosevic finally got the goal he was looking for in
the last minute of normal time, but before anybody could think about a possible
comeback, Solari and Figo combined to set up Zidane for him to round off the
scoreline. The result left Radomir Antic's team back down in the relegation
spots, and with Valencia and Deportivo both losing, Madrid opened up what is
looking like an unassailable lead at the top. |
