Third placed Deportivo took advantage of Madrid's slip to close the gap behind them to three points with a 4-1 win over Zaragoza. Once again Valerón was one of the stars of the match, but after hitting the post in the fourth minute he turned a Savio free kick into his own net a minute later under pressure from Generelo. But the Galicians came back strongly, and after Duscher and Valerón had both gone close, Luque found Diego Tristán with a cross from the left wing for him to level the scores.

Either side could have scored after that, with Galletti having a goal disallowed for offside and Víctor hitting the post at the other end. But Valerón got on the end of Víctor's corner five minutes after the restart to head his side into the lead, and there was no looking back. Tristán got his second of the night with a well placed header after Luque had left Rebosio for dead before crossing in, and substitutes Sergio and Pandiani combined for the latter to set up the former for the fourth goal. The result leaves Zaragoza down in the bottom three, and manager Paco Flores is under pressure to get a good result in the cup at Barcelona midweek to keep his job.
