Celta paid the price for
their historical triumph against AC Milan midweek, their tired players being
held to a 2-2 draw by Atlético Madrid. The Vigo based side were hoping
that their qualification for the last 16 of the Champions' League would enable
them to get their league campaign back on track, but they found themselves
behind with just over a quarter of an hour gone when an unmarked Simeone headed
Ibagaza's corner down past Cavallero.
The Galicians fought back
though, and Luccin levelled the scores from a free kick later in the half,
Berizzo making space in the defensive wall for the French midfielder to drill
his shot through the middle and past the surprised Burgos. Three minutes later
they were in front, Milosevic getting ahead of the defence to touch Jesuli's
cross past the advancing keeper.
Fernando Torres could have
equalised for Atlético three minutes after the restart, but his clever
back-heel from a left-sided cross was turned away for a corner by the attentive
Cavallero. But after that they handed back control to the hosts, and Jesuli
could have put Celta further ahead when his shot was blocked by a defender. But
with eight minutes to go Lequi saved his side a point with an extraordinary
goal,
the central defender finding
the ball with his back to goal after it hit him on the shoulder, hooking it
back over his head past two defenders and smashing it first time into the roof
of the net. A goal in a million which keeps Atlético in fifth spot
