Atlético Madrid's run
of five wins in a row came to an end when they were beaten 3-1 by Valladolid on
a rain-sodden Nueva Zorrilla pitch. Musampa put Gregorio Manzano's side ahead
early on, somewhat against the run of play, poking a shot past Bizzarri from
the edge of the area after a clever back-heel pass by Nikolaidis set him up.
But otherwise they were upstaged by their hosts, and Makukula felt himself
unlucky when referee Moreno Delgado ruled out a headed goal a few minutes
later.
It didn't take Makukula long
though to get his just reward, beating Burgos for the second time with another
header just inside the far post from Zapata's free kick. And the referee's
error was cancelled out before half time when he allowed Zapata's strike to
stand, even though Sousa had been in an offside position when he back-heeled a
shot at Burgos in the play leading up to the goal.
Atlético were left
with ten men though just before half time when stand in left back Ortíz
was given a second yellow card, and Makukula could have wrapped things up after
the restart when he splashed through the puddles past two defenders but then
shot straight at the keeper. However the Portuguese under 21 international got
through again later in the half, and this time squared across for Sousa to
strike a shot low into the net. It was enough to take his side within a point
of their opponents, who themselves are in seventh place, just outside of the
UEFA spots on goal difference. |
