Leaders Deportivo were surprised by struggling Mallorca, who put in their best performance of the season to beat the Galicians 0-2. Luis Aragonés rewarded his three ex Atlético substitutes from the last match, Nagore, Stankovic and Correa, with a place in the starting line up after they helped steady the ship against Barcelona, and they repeated the act in the Riazor. Stankovic in particular came close to scoring with a free kick early on, and he hit the post later in the first half with another shot. Depor had only tested Leo Franco once up to that point, the keeper saving well from Víctor's free kick, but Luque did hit the post shortly before the break with a low shot from wide on the left.

With Mallorca packing midfield, Depor had little room to breath, and on the hour mark Irureta changed an ineffective Valerón and Tristán to bring on Fran and Pandiani. Before they had much time to settle in though, the visitors took the lead, referee Téllez Sánchez awarding a hotly disputed penalty when Correa fell under a challenge from Romero. Eto'o converted the kick for his eighth of the season in all competitions, and to the surprise of all, Bruggink made it two near the end when he ran on to Nagore's through ball to hook a shot high over the keeper and in to the net. Mallorca had done what nobody else had been able to do, stop Depor from scoring a take points away from the Riazor. The hand of Aragonés is already starting to show.
