A fascinating match at
Manzanares, where Gregorio Manzano and Luis Aragonés faced off against
each other after effectively swapping sides this season. Aragonés only
took over at San Moix a week ago after Manzano's summer replacement Jaime
Pacheco got the boot, although he knows the place well from his previous spell
in charge a couple of years back. And curiously his first squad included four
players who he was willing to let go last season while still at Atleti, Colsa
and Nagore who started the match and Stankovic and Correa who came on in the
second half.
With his team down in the
bottom three, Manzano was under pressure to get a result, and he made a couple
of key changes, bringing back Simeone as a central defender and giving
Nikolaidis his first start up front with Fernando Torres. After a good start by
the visitors, Atlético finally got into their stride, and Torres brought
a good save out of reserve keeper Miki. And a minute later the young Spanish
international finally got his first goal of the season, heading home a free
kick from Ibagaza.
The lead only lasted twelve
minutes though before Eto'o equalised with his fourth goal in four days from
Campano's pass. Four minutes later Torres thought he had restored the lead when
he headed past Miki from a corner, but referee Losantos Omar ruled it out for a
supposed foul by Lequi which only he saw. The game degenerated on a wet pitch
after the break, although Cortés had to head an effort from Lequi off
the line. But with the visitors attacking, and Eto'o and Stankovic both wasting
chances, substitute Jorge beat Miki with an injury time free kick to take
Atlético above their opponents and out of the bottom three.
