Barcelona missed out on the
chance to join Valencia at the top of the table when they were held to a 1-1
draw by Osasuna, their second consecutive such result in the Nou Camp this
season. Rijkaard lined up again with Kluivert, Saviola and Ronaldinho in his
side, but they were unable to break down a well ordered defence throughout the
first half. Saviola and Luis Enrique both shot wide, Ronaldinho was closed down
when advancing on goal and Luis Enrique had another shot blocked before the
break.
Osasuna's only attempt at
goal in the first 45 minutes was a header from Bakayoko right at the start, but
eight minutes in to the second half Cruchaga lost his marker to head
Puñal's corner past Víctor Valdés. Rijkaard brought on
Quaresma and Overmars to give his side width, and a few minutes after coming on
the Catalans got the equaliser, Quaresma's cross being cleared by Sanzol only
as far as Ronaldinho, who's wayward shot was deflected into his own net by
right back Izquierdo.
Barça kept up the
pressure after the goal, and Kluivert got the ball in the net near the end only
to see the strike ruled out as Saviola was offside. But all in all it was a
disappointing performance by the Blaugrana, who have not been able to beat
Osasuna in their last six meetings. They go on to Slovakia for their first
round UEFA cup match, hoping for a good result to stop their season from going
off the rails even at this early stage. |
