Deportivo La Coruña beat Athletic Bilbao 2-0 on Wednesday to move to the top of the table, the only side to have won both their opening games and also the only side not to have let in a goal. The hero of the night was once again Pandiani, who for the second game in a row came on for Diego Tristán in the second half and headed Héctor's cross down past Aranzubia within a minute of making his appearance. The substitution was not without it's problems though, and manager Irureta was caught on camera having a fierce argument with Tristán, who objected to being replaced once again.

Athletic had started well, looking for their first points of the season, and Molina was well placed to save Etxeberría's early header. But Depor took the lead soon afterwards, Valerón collecting a return pass from Tristán and producing a magnificent chip which left the Bilbao keeper clutching at air. Athletic came close to scoring a few minutes later when Tiko crashed a long shot against the post, and Ezquerro and Etxeberría both failed to find the target when presented with a double chance before half time. Pandiani finished them off though, and although Gurpegui and Ezquerro both headed wide later on, Valverde's side find themselves down at the bottom of the table without a point or a goal to their name to date.
