Fifth placed Xerez
are still in with a remote chance of promotion after they won 0-1 at
Compostela on Saturday evening. Bernd Schuster's side extended their
unbeaten run to eleven matches thanks to a goal by Zárate directly from
a corner in the first half, local keeper Tito misjudging the kick and allowing
it to drop into the net. The Andalucians had to play all the second half with
ten men after Mendoza was sent off for retaliating after he was fouled by
Juanito.
Eibar held Las
Palmas to a 0-0 draw in the only other game of the day, a result which does
no real favour to either side. Scoring chances were few and far between, with
only a Reggi header for the visitors causing any real problems for either
keeper in the first half. It was only in the last ten minutes that the game
woke up, with Baiano having a goal disallowed for offside and Lediakhov hitting
the crossbar with a free kick in injury time.
The top two clubs
Murcia and Albacete drew 0-0 on Sunday lunchtime, taking both of
them a little further to the first division. The locals should have taken the
lead in the first minute when they awarded a penalty after Richi was brought
down by Simeón, but Roa saved Tito's spot kick. Richi and Karanka both
went close before the break as well, but the second half belonged to the
visitors, with Reinke saving from Siviero, Parri and Duré. Albacete's
challenge finished though when Simeón was sent off a quarter of an hour
from the end, and both sides settled for a draw which keeps the visitors one
point ahead of their rivals.
The other game at Sunday
midday between Getafe and Numancia also ended in a draw. Neither
side could break through in the first half, with Craioveanu having a penalty
appeal turned down for the home side and Marini seeing his header cleared off
the line by Diego Rivas for the visitors soon afterwards. Rivas showed his
worth at the other end scoring the opening goal shortly after the break, but
Ojeda made it 1-1 four minutes later after Fagiani headed on Kome's cross.
Zaragoza closed the
gap between the top three to a point later on Sunday evening after beating
Badajoz 2-0. The visitors almost surprised their hosts though and
dominated the first half hour before Paco Flores's side took the lead against
the run of play, Cani getting on the end of Galletti's cross to fire a shot
past Poli. Soriano had a chance to increase the lead before half time after
Espadas was fouled in the area, but struck his penalty kick against the post.
But he made up for it in the second half after Miguel Alfonso committed another
penalty on Cani, this time making no mistake with his kick. The defeat leaves
Badajoz down in bottom spot.
Fourth place Levante
scraped a 2-2 draw at home to Poli Ejido thanks to an injury time goal
from Félix, but they are now five points adrift of the promotion spots.
the Valencia based side were up against it from the fourth minute when keeper
Aizpurúa was sent off for handling outside of the area, but they were
still able to take the lead with an Amato penalty just before half time after
ex Mallorca and Newcastle defender Marcelino handled the ball inside the area.
Ejido came back though with two goals in the second half, the first when
Mazzoni deflected a free kick past substitute keeper Rafa and the second when
Luis Gil shot from close range, before Félix saved a point following a
corner.
The struggle for survival is
hotting up, with Oviedo moving off the bottom after beating Elche
2-1. The Asturians found themselves behind in the second minute when Meca beat
Jonathan from close up, but levelled the scores midway through the first half
when keeper visiting Aizkorreta and a defender left the ball to each other,
Pablo Díaz nipping in between them to score. David Cano rattled the
crossbar after the restart before Sergio scored the winning goal from a long
free kick, the Elche players protesting to the referee that they were making a
substitution when the kick was being taken. Oviedo were left with ten men when
Amieva was sent off later on, and he was followed down the tunnel by both
managers, Julian Rubio for the visitors and Antonio Rivas for the locals, who
were shown the red card for protesting.
Racing Ferrol also
came from a goal down to win 2-1 against Sporting Gijon, and they move
to within two points of safety. Villa put the visitors in front with a quarter
of an hour on the clock following a corner, but the introduction of Uche later
in the half inspired the home side, and they equalised when Juan put through
his own net on the stroke of half time. Ramis headed the winner after the break
to keep his side in twentieth place, two points above Sporting's neighbours
Oviedo.
Fourth from bottom
Leganés drew 1-1 at Tenerife to edge up to within a point
of getting out of the relegation zone. Both goals came early on, with
Macanás heading Lawal's corner past Aragoneses to put the visitors
ahead, and Paunovic replying with a shot from the edge of the area after Kiko
Ratón set him up. After that though the heat got the better of the
players, giving the locals their seventeenth draw of the season. Their fans
didn't like it though, and booed manager David Amaral when he brought on
striker Barata too late to make any difference.
Córdoba were
dragged back down into the relegation struggle after losing 0-2 at home to
Salamanca, and after three defeats in a row they are now only a point
above the drop zone. Cacá put the visitors ahead in the thirteenth
minute, and could have extended the lead just before the interval when Jauregui
blocked his shot after he broke free. Montenegro and Soria could have scored
for the locals and Eloy had a penalty appeal turned down in the first half, but
two minutes in to the second half Escoda headed Cacá's cross past the
keeper to effectively end the Andalucians' challenge.
Terrassa are also
slipping perilously close to the bottom spots after they were beaten 3-0 by
Almería, and after topping the table at the start of the season
they now find themselves only three points off the drop. Luna opened the
scoring for the locals in the first half from Bilic's headed pass, and Juan
Jesús added a second after the restart. Francisco made it three from the
penalty spot in the last minute of ordinary time after Rubén brought
down Luna, and to make matters worse for the Catalans, Navas was sent off in
injury time. Almería move level with Terrassa on points.
