Almería
climbed out of the bottom four after defeating Las Palmas 1-0 in the
only second division game played on Saturday evening. Bilic scored the only
goal, connecting with a Juan Jesús cross with a quarter of an hour on
the clock, and after that Casuco's side set about defending their lead. Keeper
Barbero turned a dangerous Baiano free kick for a corner before the break, the
defence cleared an Orlando effort off the line in the second half and all stood
and watched as Reggi hit the bar later on. The result ends the Canary
Islanders' good run, and their hopes of promotion are now fading.
Levante kept up the
pressure on the top three though after a 4-0 victory over Leganés
on Sunday lunchtime, and they are still only a point behind the promotion
spots. The Valencia based side were held at bay for the whole of the first half
despite efforts by Amato and Congo which keeper Raúl saved, but five
minutes after the restart Macanás brought down Amato in the area and the
floodgates opened. Amato converted the resulting penalty himself, and only a
minute later Duda latched on to a Limones cross to make it two. Congo could
have scored three more if he had not come up against a keeper on top form, but
substitute Chota did find the net ten minutes from the end and Félix
added a fourth in the last minute. Leganés drop into the bottom four as
a result of the defeat.
Getafe moved up to
relative safety in mid-table after they won 2-1 against Terrassa in
their Sunday morning kick-off match. The visitors hardly troubled the Getafe
goal in all the first half, and their keeper Maestro had to be at his best to
save from Craioveanu near half time. The locals brought on ex Atlético
Madrid striker Juan Carlos at the break though, and he set up Alberto for him
to touch the ball on for Craioveanu to open the scoring. Terrassa's own Juan
Carlos equalized from Babangida's pass soon afterwards, and the home side were
left with ten men when Casado picked up a second booking. However it was
Getafe's Juan Carlos who headed the winner from Alberto's centre ten minutes
from the end to take his side above their opponents in the table.
Albacete moved to the
top of the table and extended their unbeaten run to 15 games after a 0-2 win
over Córdoba on Sunday evening. The visitors were clearly
superior throughout the first half, with Jandro shooting just wide after Perera
set him up. The Andalucians could have scored themselves though, Berruet
heading against the bar early on in one of their few efforts on target. The
game was over though ten minutes in to the second half when Jandro scored twice
in three minutes, both times set up by an excellent Pablo Sierra. Albacete
finished with a man less after Munteanu was shown the red card seven minutes
from the end, but the defence closed ranks and held on till the end.
Murcia drop to second
after they were held to a 0-0 draw by Sporting Gijon. It was as they say
a game of two halves, the first even between the two sides with keepers Reinke
for the home side and Valencia for the visitors both making excellent saves.
After the break though it was all Murcia, but Valencia kept out shots from all
over, and when he was beaten, Pulido was there to clear off the line from
Juanma. David Vidal's side lose top spot after eight weeks, but are still well
in line for promotion. Sporting consolidate their position in the top half of
the table.
Third placed Zaragoza
moved to within three points of Murcia after beating Eibar 2-0. It took
them some time to get going though, and the Basque side put up the proverbial
bus in front of their goal. The turning point came three minutes after the
break when visiting defender Sarriegi got himself sent off for a second
bookable offence, and from the resulting free kick Galletti headed Paco
Flores's side ahead. Yordi added a second near the end only two minutes after
coming on as substitute, keeping up his side's push to return to the top flight
at the first attempt.
Xerez kept up their
challenge on the top spots with an impressive 1-3 win at Tenerife, their
ninth game in a row without a loss. With less than half an hour on the clock
the Andalucians were two up, Canito controlling Zárate's pass to score
the first and Zárate adding a second himself with a free kick which took
a deflection off the defensive wall. Paunovic headed one back from Ayoze's
croos before the break, but Marioni got himself sent off for arguing with the
referee early in the second half, and with the locals pushing for an equaliser,
Mena wrapped things up with a third goal on a rapid breakaway in injury time.
Xerez stay five points behind Levante, and the Canary Islanders are now
virtually out of the promotion race.
Although Compostela's
hard up staff and players have not been paid since the start of the season,
their team goes from strength to strength. They beat Numancia 1-0 this
weekend to complete a six game run which has seen them take fifteen points to
move up to ninth in the table. The visitors could have gone ahead though when
Tito deflected Gallego's free kick onto the post, but the Gallicians went
straight up the other end and scored, Sequieros finishing off after Maikel
headed on Lima's free kck. Both sides ended with ten men after Cuéllar
fot the visitors and then Lima for the home side picked up second bookings.
Compostela move a place
above Poli Ejido, who themselves are heading the other way after their
fourth defeat in a row, this time 2-0 at Salamanca. The locals have also
been on the slide recently though, and this was their first win at home in
three months and only their fourth in the Helmantico stadium all season.
Cacá started things off with his first goal for his new club in the
sixth minute, and Escoda got the second midway through the first half after
Lupidio's shot came back off the post.
The bottom two sides Oviedo
and Racing Ferrol both won their respective games to keep alive their hopes of
survival. Ferrol beat Elche 1-0 to move above fellow strugglers
Badajoz on goal difference, although both are still four points away from the
team above them, Leganés. The only goal came from the penalty spot
midway through the first half, Pablo converting the kick after Uche was fouled.
Serrano was sent off for the visitors three minutes later for kicking David
Pérez in an off the ball incident, and after that Elche were finished.
Oviedo's 2-1 win over
relegation rivals Badajoz was only their second of the season in their
Nuevo Tartiere stadium, and takes them to within a point of the Extremadurian
side. By coincidence, this week both teams had changed their managers for the
third time this season, Antonio Rivas taking over from the hospitalized Miguel
Sánchez and Paco Miranda coming in for Zurdo López, who was
sacked. And it was Rivas who came out on top, Geni scoring twice for his side
in the second half before Leandro pulled one back near the end.
