Levante moved to
joint top spot for 24 hours after beating Oviedo 1-0 on Saturday
evening. The only goal came in the eighteenth minute from Mijatovic, who
managed to get away from his marker Yago long enough to head Carpintero's cross
past keeper Jonathan. Amato got the ball in the net a few minutes later only to
see it ruled out by the referee, but even so the home side were in control and
their opponents posed little threat throughout the match. Oviedo drop back to
last spot, and will have to improve considerably if they are to get out of
trouble this season.
Tenerife's new
manager David Amaral got off to a best possible start with a 4-0 victory over
Racing Ferrol. All four goals came in the last half hour of the game
though, with Bruno Marioni celebrating his return to the side scoring the first
with a long shot and making the second after rounding the keeper on the wing
before crossing in for Kiko Ratón to head into an empty net. Substitute
Iván Ania and Kiko added two more in the last four minutes to give the
Canary Islanders their best result of the season. Ferrol drop down into the
bottom four having now gone nine games without a win.
Leganés on the
other hand have put together a run of ten games without defeat after drawing
1-1 with Terrassa in their Saturday night match. The Madrid based side
went behind in the eighth minute when the referee ruled that Besora had been
fouled in the area, Keko transforming the resulting penalty kick. However they
came back strongly, with Lawal shooting over the bar and Miguel Angel hitting
the post, and on the stroke of half time Miguel Angel levelled the scores,
again from a dubious penalty after Lawal had been tackled by Recio.
Poli Ejido won their
local derby game on Sunday lunchtime against Almería 2-0 to move
back into contention for the promotion spots. Paco Herrera's side had not won
at home since mid-October, but they took the lead early on when Sabino followed
up after keeper Rubén failed to hold on to Angel Rodríguez's free
kick. José added a second before half time after good work by Poschner
and Luis Gil, and Sierra could have made it three after the break when he hit
the bar. By then the visitors were playing with ten men after central defender
Ortega was sent off for a second bookable offence.
Murcia took the
honorary title of mid-season winter champions after holding on to top spot with
a 2-0 win over Compostela. David Vidal's side looked tired after their
narrow cup defeat against Deportivo, but they were more than a match for the
Gallicians. Juanma opened the scoring in the twelfth minute from Richi's cross,
and Ismael hit the post later in the first half. The visitors thought
themselves unlucky when the referee disallowed a Loreto goal and then turned
down a penalty appeal on the striker, but ten minutes in to the second half
Richi headed Maciel's cross past Tito to secure their fourth win in a row and
their ninth game without defeat.
Zaragoza are still
only a point behind the leaders though after an injury time goal by Yordi gave
them a 0-1 win at Salamanca. Paco Flores' side are seemingly en route to
a return to the top flight even though they are not on their best form at the
moment, and they were dominated for most of the match by an opponent desperate
to score a goal after eleven hours without doing so. However Vucko, returning
from injury, missed an easy chance after the break and Quique Martín and
Escoda both hit the woodwork before Yordi's late strike.
Albacete stay three
points behind Levante in fourth place after being held 1-1 against
Eibar. The match ended in controversy after the referee disallowed a
last minute headed goal from the home side's Mikel which would have given the
Manchegans the victory. The visitors had taken the lead in the twentieth minute
when Jorge Rodríguez headed a Jorge Sánchez corner past Roa.
However Perera levelled the scores from Oscar's cross later in the half, and
Basti could have put the locals in front when he shot wide just before the
break. In the second half, visiting keeper Moso (who had only just joined on
loan from Albacete the week before) kept out efforts from Basti and Duré
to save a much needed point.
Albacete are three points
ahead of a group of four teams headed by Elche, who beat Las
Palmas 3-2 thanks to a hotly disputed last goal. The incident came two
minutes from the end when the referee awarded an indirect free kick to the
locals inside the penalty area, and with the visiting players surrounding the
referee in protest, Raúl Ivars took the kick and passed to
Cuéllar who scored into the empty net. Nino had given Elche the lead in
the first minute, but by half time the Canary Islanders were in front thanks to
a Pedro Vega free kick and an Orlando strike. New signing Luque made it all
square with another free kick after the break, and visiting keeper Bo Andersen
kept out everything until the controversial goal, which Las Palmas are expected
to launch a formal complaint about.
Sporting Gijon beat
struggling Badajoz 4-0, who sink further down into the relegation spots
as a result. Diego Alegre set up Lozano and then Christian Díaz to put
the Asturians two in front by half time, the first from a cross and the second
from a corner, and Lozano almost made it three with a shot from his own half
after the break which caught Baines off his line. Pulido though did though
scramble a third goal on the hour mark on his home debut, and two minutes later
Villa put Pablo Alvarez away to beat Baines again for the final score.
Xerez were held to a
2-2 draw by Numancia, and have yet to win since returning to their
Chapín stadium in Jerez ea few weeks ago. They found themselves behind
twice though in this match, starting in the sixth minute when Rosu surprised
keeper Ramón with a low shot from outside of the area. Calle won himself
a penalty when brought down by Cuéllar which he converted himself, but
midway through the first half the visitors took the lead again with a well
struck free kick from new signing Aranda. Zárate and Calle both missed
golden opportunities after the break before Mena finally got the equaliser.
Xerez's Morena was sent off for a second bookable offence near the end.
Finally
Córdoba's ten new winter signings are starting to have an
immediate effect, and they won 3-0 over Getafe to move off the bottom
spot above Oviedo. All three goals came from their new players, with the first
two coming from passes by Serban in the build up to half time, Fernando
converting the first and Montenegro the second. Local keeper Jauregui saved
well from Rubén Reyes after the break, but Moisés headed home a
free kick from Montenegro later in the half to give the Andalucians only their
third win of the season. |
