A three way tie at the top
of the table, with Albacete, Terrassa and Xerez neck-and-neck with seven points
each and identical goal averages. It looks like being another close,
low-scoring contest though, with no team having either three wins or three
defeats, and only 23 goals scored in the weekend's eleven games.
Albacete moved to the
top for 24 hours after winning 1-2 away at Numancia on Saturday evening.
The visitors went in front in the third minute through Perera after
Nuñez failed to clear a corner, and went close to extending their lead
through Duré and Perera again. The Soria based side came back after the
break though, and Patrick Suffo headed an equaliser from a corner. However
three minutes later Libero Parri hit the winner for the Manchegans against his
old side.
Terrassa beat
Salamanca 1-0 thanks to an own goal in the first half from Aurelio while
trying to cut out a cross. The visitors had almost taken the lead minutes
earlier when Escoda hit the post. Visiting keeper Stelea saved several efforts
in the second half though, including one near the end from substitute
Babangida. The team from the outskirts of Barcelona are proving once again to a
surprise package despite any big-name signings. Remember they won promotion by
becoming the first team ever to win all six games in the play-offs.
Xerez defeated
Sporting Gijon with a late strike from Dani Pendín, who headed
Cachorro's free kick wide of the keeper. The home side played over half the
game with ten men after Zárate got himself sent off just before the
break, shortly after the ex Málaga player had hit the post with an
angled shot. The game was played in the San Fernando ground, the first of four
home games which have to be played outside of their own stadium after the
disciplinary committee turned down their appeal against a ground closure for
crowd trouble last season. Sporting join local rivals Oviedo in the bottom four
with only one point from three games.
Last week's leaders
Murcia were defeated, also by 1-0, by promotion favourites
Zaragoza. Paco Flores' side has yet to adapt to the second division
though, and once again they struggled. B team keeper Miguel, standing in for
the suspended Lainez and injured Valbuena, made a vital save from David Karanka
just before half time to keep the scores level. Eventually though Zaragoza's
best player Aragón settled it with a shot from outside of the area after
good work by David Pirri.
An exciting match at
Almería, where a Mijatovic lead Levante came back from two
goals down to draw 2-2. The appearance of the man who scored the winning goal
for Real Madrid in the European cup final five years ago has not only increased
the number of season ticket holders at his own club, but is also doing wonders
for his opponents, with the Andalucians recording an increase of over a
thousand new members during the week. The home side seemed to have their first
win of the season in the bag after they scored twice in a five minute period
late in the first half, Olivares heading home after César laid back a
corner and Francisco taking a pass from Ortíz to beat Rafa. However
Amato pulled one back early in the second half from Jofre's cross, and then won
his side a penalty two minutes from time. It had to be Mijatovic who slotted
home the spot kick for the equaliser, keeping up Levante's run of nine away
games without defeat.
Las Palmas put aside
the infighting between their directors to battle back from a goal down to save
a point against Compostela. The visitors had the better chances in the
first half, and a few minutes after Pignol rattled the crossbar, Maikel put
them in front with a shot from the edge of the area. The Canary Islanders came
back in the second half though, and Angel set up Rubén to level the
scores at 1-1. Las Palmas are on four points, one ahead of their opponents who
have drawn all three of their opening games.
Las Palmas' Canary Island
neighbours Tenerife have started the season badly, and they lost 2-1 at
Getafe on Sunday lunchtime. There were two penalties in the first
quarter of an hour, with Luis López putting the home team in front and
Barata equalising three minutes later. The home side were left with ten men
when Chiqui picked up a second booking late in the game. However Borja got on
the end of Craioveanu's pass to give the Madrid based side their first victory
of the season two minutes from the end.
Cash strapped Oviedo
could not have got off to a worse start either, and they are down near the
bottom of the table after losing 1-2 at home to Racing Ferrol. After a
goal-less first half, the Asturians took the lead when Oli volleyed home a
cross from Pablo Díaz. Straight from the kick off though the visitors
equalised through Jaio, and although Oviedo were on top from then on, a mistake
by defender Raúl let in Dutil for a late winner.
Badajoz also dropped
into the bottom four after losing at home 0-2 to Poli Ejido. It was an
even game, but goals by two players who played in the first division last
season settled it. Tevenet hit the first early on with a 25 yard free kick, and
Sabino made it two after the break following a corner. Ejido ended with ten men
after Arturo got himself sent off. The defeat cost the job of Badajoz manager
Rodri, who was sacked the day after the game.
Eibar scored only
their first goal of the season after almost four hours of trying, but it was
enough to take them up above their opponents Córdoba to the top
half of the table with five points. Their 1-0 win came about thanks to a second
half penalty from Garitano, although they also have keeper Asier Riesgo and
midfielder Uriz to thank for last minute saves.
The match between
Elche and Leganés started with a bang but ended with a
fizzle. Benja gave the home side the lead heading home a corner in the second
minute and Falcón equalised in the ninth. However that was it for the
scoring, with keepers Toni and Raúl taking command, and the game ended
in a 1-1 draw. |
