Murcia are the
surprise leaders of the second division after they recorded their second win in
a row, defeating big-spending Getafe 2-0. David Vidal's low budget side
were the only ones to record maximum points, and they are now two points clear
of no less than eight teams tied on four. Loreto headed them into the lead with
a quarter of an hour gone, and Isach added a second in injury time as Getafe
came out pressing for the equaliser. The game was watched by Spain's ex manager
José Antonio Camacho, who is from the Murcia area and who received a
gold and diamond insignia from the club.
A table topping match at
Xerez, where early leaders Las Palmas and the local side played
out an exciting 2-2 draw. The Canary Islanders two Brazilians combined with a
quarter of an hour gone to open the scoring, Alvaro heading home Baiano's free
kick. Bernd Schuster's side should have equalised, with Nauzet saving a
Zárate penalty and Cañizares hitting the post, but Rubén
put the visitors further ahead after the break. Schuster brought on an extra
forward Deus, and within minutes he had pulled one back from Jesule's cross.
Four minutes later Jesule set up Moreno to head the equaliser, and Cachorro
could have snatched it in the last minute when he fired another shot against
the woodwork. Las Palmas ended the game with ten men after Baiaino was shown a
second yellow card.
The tie of the day though
was probably in Valencia, where local side Levante defeated promotion
favourites Zaragoza 3-2. With ex Real Madrid and Fiorentina star
Mijatovic making his home debut a large crowd turned up, but they had to wait
until the second half to see any goals. Amato gave them the lead soon after the
restart, and Mijatovic set up Limones for a second two minutes later. Yordi
pulled one back, deflecting Corona's shot into the net, but Jofre worked free
inside the area to restore the two goal cushion. Levante's Castaño was
sent off for a second bookable offence a quarter of an hour from the end, and a
late scrambled goal by Drulic set up an exciting last few minutes. The
striker's goal was not enough though, and Zaragoza are finding that life is not
so easy at this level.
Córdoba got
revenge for their elimination from the cup by Almería with a 3-0
victory in a match brought forward to Saturday evening, and that was despite
playing over half the match with ten men after Brazilian defender Sandro was
sent off. Juanlu opened the scoring in the first half, and López Ramos
and Marcos Márquez added two more to take them into second place,
heading the group of teams on four points thanks to a superior goal average.
Almería drop to last place, the only club not to pick up a point in the
first two games.
Newly promoted
Terrassa joined the group on four points after defeating Poli
Ejido 1-2, their first win of the season. Rubén López headed
them in front on the stroke of half time, and although David Prats levelled the
scores with a good shot, Keko scored the winner from close up near the end. the
match was played at Almería's stadium as Ejido's Santo Domingo ground is
still being renovated.
Leganés
recorded their first victory of the season with a 2-1 win over Numancia
thanks to a beautifully struck free kick from Lawal ten minutes from the end.
Both keepers kept the score level in the first half, with Nuñez saving
from Ramón and Villa and Raúl stopping a shot from Sestelo, who
also hit the post. However Nuñez could do nothing when Villa followed up
his save from Miguel Angel to open the scoring in the second half. Kome
equalised for the visitors a few minutes later with a solo effort, but then
Lawal popped up to give the Madrid based side the win. The home side ended with
ten players on the pitch after Darmon was shown a red card for a horrendous
tackle in the last minute which could cost him a lengthy ban.
Tenerife saved a
point against Oviedo on Saturday evening levelling the scores at 1-1
after Oli had given the Asturians the lead. Barata made it all square after the
break, and the visitors ended the game with ten men after Idiakez picked up a
second yellow card for diving only twenty minutes after making his debut as
substitute for his new club. Tenerife may well be missing the services of
Barata though in the near future. Their appeal against a one year ban under the
false passport scandal has been turned down.
The Gallician derby between
Racing Ferrol and Compostela on Saturday evening also ended 1-1,
mainly thanks to a good performance by the visiting keeper Oliver. They did
take the lead though when Iñigo put through his own net, but Guatemalan
striker Pezzarossi followed up his brace in the cup with an equalising goal
before the half time interval.
Eibar played out
their second 0-0 draw of the season, this time away at Salamanca, and
after three hours of league football their fans have yet to see a goal. As
expected it was a dull game, with the visitors packing their defence and
looking to score on the breakaway. The weather did not help though, and the
rain made conditions difficult for both sides.
The game between Sporting
Gijon and Elche also ended goal-less, although it was a much more
interesting fixture than the one above. Both sides created chances throughout
the match, but were unable to beat the two keepers, Valencia for the Asturians
and ex Atlético and Espanyol minder Toni for the visitors.
The last match of the day
between Albacete and Badajoz kicked off late in the evening due
to a local fiesta. The home side won 1-0 thanks to a spectacular flying volley
from ex Valencia midfielder Libero Parri in the first half, and should have
increased their lead later in the game. However Argentine international keeper
Carlos Roa was forced to make an important save in the last minute to prevent
the visitors from snatching an undeserved point. |
