Alavés said goodbye
to the first division with a 1-1 draw against Valladolid. The match was played
in intense heat, and with nothing at stake the pace was slow right from the
start. Visiting keeper Bizzarri kept out Iván Alonso early on, and there
was virtually no goalmouth action until Aganzo controlled a long pass and left
the retiring Abelardo and Karmona for dead before shooting low past reserve
keeper Juan Pablo. And young debutant Alvaro could have added a second before
the break after Aganzo set him up, but he failed to take his chance.
Aranguren substituted
Karmona five minutes after the restart, the veteran captain presumably taking
leave of his fans, and Geli came on in his place. Within minutes the new man
produced a run down the wing which finished with a high cross in, Pablo
connecting with a first time volley from the edge of the area to level the
scores. After that the Vitoria based side picked up their ideas, and
Rubén Navarro went close. But Oscar González could have won it
for the visitors when he headed against the post near the end. It didn't matter
much though, and the fans trudged home resigned to a return to life in the
second division next season. |
