Celta moved back up into the Champions League spots after a convincing win over local rivals Deportivo La Coruña 3-0. The first half of the game was a typical derby, with the bad feelings between the two clubs spilling on to the field of play and the only real chance a clearance off the line by Naybet from Jesuli. A quarter of an hour in to the second half though it was Jesuli who got the first goal, a spectacular header from Juanfran's cross.

Makeshift striker Edu, playing in the place of the suspended Mido, made it two a few minutes later with another header, and Celta were home and dry. Depor should have had a goal back though when referee López Nieto ruled out what looked a perfectly good goal from Makaay for offside, but Edu was there again later in the half to tuck the ball past Molina after the keeper failed to hold on to a close range header.

Makaay rounded off a poor evening putting a penalty over the bar after José Ignacio had fouled Víctor, and the La Coruña side ended the weekend virtually out of the running for the title, five points behind the leaders. The only consolation was that they are assured of a Champions League spot, but if they remain as they are at the moment in third place they will have to play a preliminary round. Not the finest day in their history.
