Celta lost ground on fourth placed Valencia after losing 5-0 in an extraordinary match at Villarreal. The first half was fairly even until the visitors found themselves with nine men, Luccin getting red carded for insulting referee Rodríguez Santiago and Mido picking up a second booking with only half an hour on the clock. Benito Floro quickly brought on two attacking players, Guayre and Víctor, and before the break Calleja had rattled the crossbar of Pinto, playing in the place of the suspended Cavallero.

The floodgates opened in the second half though, with Guayre spinning to fire a shot low into the net four minutes after the restart. Víctor chipped a second past the keeper five minutes later, and Jorge López made it three after picking up a ball on the left of the area and shooting low into the bottom corner of the net. Palermo came on to join in the fun and got his name on the scoresheet almost immediately after Pinto and Cáceres failed to clear Víctor's cross, and with the game coming to an end Guayre got his second of the night to finish things off and leave his side in thirteenth place, nine points above the bottom three and virtually safe for another season.
