Atlético Madrid are
back in the hunt for the last UEFA spot after they beat Racing Santander on
Saturday evening. Luis Aragonés's side had the better of the first half,
but were unable to score despite several efforts to do so, José
Marí trying early on but being chased down in the area, and Emerson also
going close. Correa was disappointing though, and after missing an easy chance
Aragonés decided to take him off and bring on Javi Moreno. It was to
prove an inspired decision, the "forgotten man" scoring both goals after the
break to give his side their first win in nine games.
Atlético kept up the
pressure in the second half, and soon after Aguilera rattled the crossbar,
Moreno combined with Jorge down the left wing before firing a low shot wide of
Lemmens. Racing's only shot at goal up to then had been from a Benayoun free
kick which Esteban had fisted away in the first half, and with manager Chuchi
Cos sitting up in the stands after being given a one year ban by the
federation, assistant manager Nando Yosu (together with his president Dmitri
Piterman) decided to make three changes. It didn't work out as planned though,
and a few minutes later Javi Moreno made it two from the penalty spot after
Neru had brought down Aguilera in the area. Racing fell to their first defeat
in seven games, and drop back down to fifteenth place. |
